Black is the most-used enamel colour for metalwork. It gives iron gates, grills, railings and window frames a classic, glossy look that hides dirt and pairs with any wall colour.
This is a ready-mixed synthetic enamel, so there's no tinting needed. Open the tin, stir and apply.
Black is also the usual choice for repainting old, faded metalwork, because it covers previous colours well and makes rusty grills look new again once they're properly primed. It sets off cream, white and pastel walls, and frames a garden or entrance neatly.
Remove rust, old flaking paint and grease, then sand the surface lightly. Apply a suitable primer — red oxide or zinc chromate for iron, wood primer for wood. Brush on two thin coats of enamel, thinning with mineral turpentine as directed on the tin, and let the first coat dry fully before the second.
Recommended primer: Red oxide or zinc chromate primer on iron; wood primer on wood.
Black works with almost anything, but it looks especially sharp against white, cream, light grey and pastel walls. On a dark exterior, a lighter metal colour such as Smoke Grey or Blaze White may stand out better.
Yes. Synthetic enamel is made for iron and wood, indoors and outdoors. For gates and grills, remove rust and apply a metal primer first so the black topcoat lasts longer.
Enamel is oil-based, so it's thinned with mineral turpentine, not water. Follow the thinning ratio printed on the tin, and clean your brushes with turpentine afterwards.
